Months ago, I first saw the work of @markinducil, and I immediately knew I had stumbled across a unique and rare talent. His work may be digital, but it is so tactile that I feel as if I can reach through the screen and feel the textures. I could wax poetic on this work for hours, but instead, let’s hear from the artist in his own words.

What’s your name, where are you from and how would you describe the work that you create?

My name’s Mark Constantine Inducil. I was originally born in the Philippines and I’m now based in Melbourne, Australia. I create surreal and abstract images often influenced and inspired by my love for cinema and interest in psychology and philosophy.

You have such a distinct and beautiful style. I’m wondering about the genesis of your creative drive… where did this journey start for you? Is there a moment that you knew you would pursue a creative path?

When I was a kid I used to draw a lot. I also remember being bored and lonely most of the time so I day-dreamed a lot to pass the time. Looking back to that time, I think that’s how I developed my imagination.

There was also this moment that our relatives came back from the U.S. and brought several stacks of comic books. I think there were at least 30 or 40 comic books and I remember going through each and every one and just looking through the art. I really got obsessed with drawing after that.

I think I’ve always known that I would be in the creative industry. My passion is definitely into the arts. I’ve held a lot of different roles over the years from layout artist to art director to cinematographer to motion designer and all those experiences have helped shape my personal art to what it is right now.

Beautifully said. I’m curious about the relationship between creativity and social media- there are benefits to this connectivity and there are also pitfalls. In your experience, what are the pros and cons of social networking?

For me the biggest pro in social media is how easy it is to share your work with other people and the fact that you can instantly engage with them.

The only con I can think of is not really a con in itself but I guess it’s the attitude you have towards it. It’s easy to feel depressed by the amount of talented people out there. I had a phase like that and even though I was inspired by other people’s work, it felt like each day more and more weight was being placed on your shoulders because it felt like your progress was too slow. Then I realised that all our journeys are different and the only thing you can do is just concentrate on the work.

“Comparison is the thief of joy” is one of my favorite quotes about our tendency to fall into those traps!
What has been you experience so far dabbling in the NFT world? Are you excited about the potential of this technology?

It’s very exciting. I’ve only been in the NFT world for 3 months or so and it has been a very interesting experience. The community is amazing. The people that I’ve met, both fellow artists and collectors, are extremely supportive of each other. As an artist, to be able to sell your work to collectors and have it be so accessible, it really gives you the chance to live off your art. I still have much to learn and I’m taking it one day at a time but so far it’s been very rewarding.

Agreed! The potential is so vast. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today, I very much look forward to seeing how you navigate this exciting new world.
